POSSIBLE FUNDING JEOPARDY Plans for mega facility need to be released soon or funding could be lost GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Funding for a controversial Denton Park mega-facility could be in jeopardy if the city council do not begin public consultation on the plans soon. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said he has received a strong “message” from Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck that the money could be lost if the plans are not released soon. According to the annual plan $14.6 million has been put aside for the Hornby Library and Service Centre, South West Pool projects. The Western News reported last month the likely location would be Denton Park. “One of the scariest things is that if we don’t get this process under way – with the constant reviews of the capital expenditure, we could lose the funding. “And we have been battling to get that money for our community facility,” said Mr Mora. Other options include Kyle Park and Hornby High School. The community board and city council are remaining tight-

lipped about the details. Ms Buck said she would not respond to Mr Mora’s comments on funding. She was “keen to get on with things”. City council recreation and sports unit manager John Filsell said Mr Mora’s comments were “a bit dramatic”, but admitted city council funding is always at risk. He said when projects are not started, funding becomes “more vulnerable”. But to lose the funding would require a city council vote. He said he has been given a “hurry up” by city councillors and residents. Mr Mora said he could not push for the plans to be released earlier. He said it was up to Mr Filsell. “The ball is firmly in his

court,” he said. Mr Filsell could not give the Western News a definite date when the plans would be released. “It won’t be next week but it won’t be in six months’ time. Time is of the essence.” But anxious sports groups may hear more about the plans

earlier, he said. Hornby Cricket Club president Kevin Hornbrook said it has not heard from the city council yet and was worried plans would “end” the club. Hornby Rugby Football Club President John Catchpole said with the season beginning the three weeks, they need cer-

Call for cafe boycott BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A Halswell group is urging people to boycott the cafe at Te Hapua: Halswell Centre after the lease was given to a nonlocal business. Wellington-based company Wishbone was granted the lease for the new centre’s cafe in February last year before the centre opened in November. But the Halswell Community Project is frustrated the lease was not given to a local business and wants people to go to nearby cafes instead. Chairwoman Chrys Horn said the city council should support local businesses. “We do work quite hard to think about local economic development so I get a bit frustrated when I see these things. I was a wee bit disappointed and thought why did they do this,” she said. “It’s a pity it wasn’t at least a Christchurch business, we pay our money over the counter and it pretty much goes to Wellington.” She said all the food was flown down from Wellington, and was packaged in plastic which was not economically

friendly. Christchurch company Red Cafe, which has cafes in South Christchurch and Riccarton libraries, was the only other applicant for the lease. City council property consultancy manager Angus Smith said the city council chose Wishbone because it provided a quality product, value and professional service. “The Wishbone proposal demonstrated a diverse selection of product, highly efficient

systems and proven business model. Wishbone employs local staff and contractors in their operations and places an emphasis on sustainability.” When asked whether cost or the fact it was a local business applying influenced lease decisions, he said it factored in several aspects within the evaluation process. Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke said he had no problems with the cafe itself, just the process

that lead to it being chosen. “A number of people on the committee have raised the issue that the council depends on people paying rates for its funding yet the council has awarded the contract to an out of town company that doesn’t pay rates.” He would like to see the city council adopt a local purchasing policy when it came to these sorts of leases. Wishbone did not respond to the Western News.

WASTE WATER REPAIRS OVERVIEW Major roadwork repairs to earthquake-damaged wastewater pipes that begun in November last year will run until September. The work involves CCTV investigations, lining of wastewater pipes and open trenching in the road to replace the damaged wastewater main pipes. At the completion of the work SCIRT will reinstate the road where it has been working. CCTV investigations of the main pipe will be carried out at night as the flows are low. When this happens there is a potential for blow back. This is when wastewater comes back up through residents toilets. If this occurs, contact SCIRT so they can arrange for a professional cleaner. Other general impacts include road closures, lane reductions and detours. Temporary traffic management will result in limited or no vehicle access. NATIONAL GO BY BIKE DAY Christchurch will be celebrating “Go by Bike Day” as part of the national celebration. Hop on a bicycle and give cycling a go this Wednesday at 7-9am. Meet other cyclists at locations including Hagley Park by Matai St, CPIT Aoraki campus, Community and Public Health on 310 Manchester St and Meridian Energy on 104 Moorhouse Ave. Get free breakfast snacks, giveaways, bike checks and try riding an electric bike.

your local Views Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton Quarrying has long been an upsetting issue for lifestyle block residents in the north-west of the city, where clouds of dust eddy hang in the air. The Yaldhurst Residents’ Association has made a valiant effort to prevent the expansion of quarrying, but has generally been unsuccessful in the courts. Events are taking a turn for the worse with two separate quarrying applications; one to move quarrying activity within 60m of an existing residential neighbourhood; two to quarry closer to the aquifer, potentially affecting Christchurch’s quality drinking water. This article deals with the interface of quarrying and residential living. Controversy erupted in November 2014, when Fulton Hogan’s application to quarry in Roberts Rd, 250m from a residential neighbourhood and Gilberthorpe School was approved by the city council as non-notified. Non-notification does not allow neighbouring residents to comment. Residents at roadside meet-

ings expressed their opposition, followed by a subsequent meeting between residents, the mayor, councillors and the MP for Selwyn. One of the outcomes was city council’s recognition that more should be done to protect residents from quarrying; the mechanism being to tighten controls in the Proposed District Plan currently before the independent hearings panel. Through mediation it was agreed that the minimum distance between quarrying and housing should be 250m – no gains on the Roberts Rd decision. The 250m setback is a standard in Victoria, Australia. Incredibly in November 2015, Fulton Hogan proposed a further quarry in Roberts Rd with a residential setback of only 60m. Most residents are completely unaware of this proposal, requested through changes to an Outline Development Plan in the Residential New Neighbourhood Zone. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board strongly opposed this application. Riccarton-Wigram community board chairman Mike Mora and I appeared before the independent hearings panel in mid January. The decision will be made by the Hearings Panel.

Facebook us on www.facebook.com/chchwesternnews Cherise Jones responds to three boys who have undertaken a mission to protect the eels at Westlake Reserve. I was shocked to hear that fishing and eeling in the reserve is allowed. I actually thought there was a sign saying it wasn’t, but obviously I was wrong. I fully support these boys and their mothers for their act of compassion and bravery, approaching eelers and protecting the eels. As an animal-lover myself I get very upset that so many people think enjoying animals just means hunting and killing them. I have in the past approached people and tried to stop them harming animals and it is a nerve-wracking thing to do, so I am so proud of these people. Animals have so much more to offer alive than dead. The time and effort these boys have put into earning the trust of

these animals has helped them to form a bond, learning empathy, patience and compassion. Isn’t that what we want for our children in this age where there seems to be so much bullying going on? Imagine how these boys would feel to see someone kill these animals. I know that many other children playing in the reserve would be very upset to see fish and eels being killed there too. Children need to enjoy the wildlife and play in a safe environment without being surrounded by killing. The lake is home to fish, eels, ducks, geese and swans and they bring a lot of enjoyment to so many. It is a very special place in our neighbourhood and the animals deserve to be protected. Centre – with this cost escalating if built on alternate land should surely have the sanction of central Riccarton Residents’ Association, Deans Avenue Precinct Society and also the Riccarton Bush/ Kilmarnock Residents’ Association and their dedication to the service needs of the entire Riccarton community. The integrity of councillor Yani Johanson to explore creative solutions to get facilities up and running and help bolster groups within the community recreation culture committee 2/4/13 is the obvious catalyst to amalgamate all community services in one venue as a true local community facility. Within this context the new Riccarton Community Centre should include the service centre and volunteer library thus servicing the needs of all Riccarton residents within this fast-growing thriving suburb destined as a future key of the city’s hub. Public consultation on sale of present site but lack of it by the city council and RiccartonWigram Community Board in respect of the library and service centre inclusion in the new venue will cause many to query the integrity or hidden agendas of both entities over this sensitive issue.

Council looks at option to keep service centre GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Controversial plans to rebuild Riccarton Community Centre show that the city council wants to shift the service centre out of the area. But the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has disagreed with the proposal to relocate it, saying they want it to remain in the central Riccarton area. It recommended it not be relocated to Upper Riccarton Library. City council staff will now look at this option. The city council was to discuss the plans behind closed doors but pressure from the residents’ associations and some board members saw them released. There were two options presented at the meeting on Tuesday. Option one, the one preferred by city council staff, was to build a fully multi-purpose design and omit the city council

service centre to the Upper Riccarton Library. The multi-purpose design would feature a main function room, foyer, four meeting/activity rooms that can be opened up to larger spaces as well as supporting amenities. Option two included the same footprint and layout as option one but it would accommodate a service centre and volunteer library. The current centre on Clar-

ence St will be partially sold to fund the new facility. “There is a preference from the community board that the service centre is either built in the new community centre or kept in the central Riccarton area,” said deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton. Contributing to cancer treatment Canterbury University student Meenal Pathak has been working to make a difference to cancer treatments. As part of the master’s programme Ms Pathak undertook an 18-week internship with the Canterbury District Health Board. She said the opportunity to work on the Faster Cancer Treatment project – a review of how patients with a high suspicion of gynaecological cancer are triaged – has been the highlight of her study. “Getting practical experience is so valuable. I’m learning so many things about building relationships in New Zealand’s work environment that you couldn’t learn in a classroom,” she said. With a wealth of experience in dentistry and hospital management, Ms Pathak already had a successful career in India. However, she wanted to expand her understanding of management to other aspects of the healthcare industry on a global level. Strong partnerships between Canterbury University’s internationally accredited executive development programmes and key employers such as the CDHB offer students individualised opportunities to gain hands-on

experience, while making a difference within local businesses and the community. Ms Pathak said her Master’s has been a fantastic introduction to studying and working in New Zealand. If you know of a local achiever, email georgia. oconnor@starmedia.kiwi

Photographer creates sweet Operation Sugar’s Jenna Young travels around the city taking photos of children with serious illnesses and received a Kiwibank Local Hero award for her efforts. Georgia O’Connor-Harding talks to her about what Operation Sugar does for sick children, the importance of photos and her late sister Theresa From looking at your photos, they are pretty amazing. What inspired you to get into photography and how long have you been doing it for? I have been doing it for nine years but it was when my sister Theresa died that I really got into it. I just realised how important photos are. Could you tell me a bit about your sister? We were just like normal sisters and I was lucky because mum and dad took a lot of photos and videos and as soon as I found out she passed away, the photos of her automatically became the most precious item I had of hers. My sister loved to laugh, she was amazing with kids, so very caring and would have made the most brilliant teacher. She was just getting started, when I photographed her one sunny

afternoon, I never in a million years would have thought that it would be for the last time. I’m so grateful for these images, I hear her laugh every time I look at it. She was 19. She was crossing the road while on holiday in Australia and was hit by a motor-cycle. It was pretty hideous. Is your sister the only sister

We both loved putting on shows and singing together. She inspired you to get into Operation Sugar as well? It probably all comes back to that. Just wanting to be able to photograph other people. It gives a bit back. Tell me a bit about the organisation?

An assignment will come in and I handle the photography side of things and I make sure the child involved had the right photographer for them. Obviously it is quite a sensitive time and we have to make sure the photographers are comfortable with that. We have done about 515 cakes in that time and photographed about 250 children and their families. Is Operation Sugar mainly the opportunity for children with illnesses to have their special birthday cakes made for them and professional photos taken? Yes, and we also donate “portrait sessions” so some families opt for that. We may be swapping to do more portrait sittings at the parties but that is still in the pipeline. Bit of planning going on there. For you personally what is the greatest part of your role being a volunteer for such an organisation? It’s hard because you know that the children and families won’t truly understand the gift of photography until something happens. So it’s getting those emails from people that really appreciate it.

memories for sick children CONNECTION: Jenna Young’s award-winning photo for the Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Print Awards. Jenna said she loves the connection with Malia in this image.

I definitely think it has made me a better photographer – it has made me realise how important my job is. Making sure I get that connection between the people I am photographing. Making sure I capture that relationship. For example, I recently photographed a little boy who was going to pass away and I wanted to capture the way he looked at his sister. She was only little but it was so she could remember how he looked at her. Trying to capture the reality of the moment? It is the connection between people that I think is important. I am no longer trying to get

photos where people are looking at the camera and are perfect. I am trying to get people looking at each other – a real moment. Do you find that is quite a skill to master? I think you have got to have the type of personality where people feel it is okay to open up with you. You have almost got to be a bit silly. It is all psychology. Do you have a particular style you enjoy capturing most? Definitely children. I love the challenge because a lot of kids can be hard to

photograph and get an authentic photo of them. And I love trying to get that. I mainly do editing on the background to make the photo look scene-like. I want the children to look a bit magical. Is it really hard photographing children who are ill? Yes, you definitely come home and realise how lucky you are and I guess there is a certain amount of guilt that comes with that. I don’t know why. I saw on your website you have a passion for child-led education. Is that why your children are homeschooled?

We have loads of people for the cakes but only about half request for a photographer which does surprise me. I guess people don’t realise how important photos are. It is not just children, it is of all ages. Make sure you have your family photos done every two years. I have a lot of photos when I was little but our last professional family portrait with my sister was when I was about six. I noticed that in my job too – I don’t get many photos with teenagers and their families. I would give anything now to have a photo of me and my sister really connecting. I took some photos of her just before she went on holiday and I am so glad I took them – she looks so happy. It sounds awful but what that person was like you do start to forget them – the characteristics they had. I don’t want to forget anything. It’s interesting because I find when you are younger you have so many photos taken and now it is not as many. Mums are quite guilty of it too. The way media portrays how women’s bodies are suppose to be, a lot of women don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Yes, part of the reason why. My husband is a pilot so his hours are all over the show – he is on a roster. In your opinion how does homeschooling benefit your children? They are free to learn their reading, writing and maths through their own interests. For example, my son Jake absolutely loves space. Instead of reading the normal books you read at school he is more happy to read a science book. What are your children most interested in at the moment? Ellie-May is quite like me. She will love her sport and she is quite creative too. Jake is as well. The other reason we did it is because I feel like art is just as important as English and math. I think school crushes creativity. Anything else you would like to add about Operation Sugar? We are always looking for more qualified photographers and there is a link on our website to apply.

Unless absolutely certain – shut door and leave

Full speed ahead for world champs JAIMIE KEAY

The city’s top waka paddlers are in full training mode as they look ahead to the world championships on the Sunshine Coast. Team Aoraki Matatu from Te Waka Pounamu have qualified for the world championships after winning the national men’s master’s title at the Waka Ama national championships. The competition was held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge on January 21-23. It was the first time the team of Jack Wormald, Iaean Cranwell, Ross Gilray, Todd Jago, Craig

Pauling and former Crusader Adrian Tukaki competed in the master’s grade at nationals after previously paddling in the open grade. Gilray said the team are likely to face the strongest competition from Tahiti at the world championships, but the team believe they have a shot at winning. “Outrigger canoeing in Tahiti is like rugby here in New Zealand, it is their national sport. So we will have to bring it if we want to have a chance at gold,” he said. Finishing the heat and semi-finals in second, in a time of 1min 56.50sec and 1min 57.95sec

respectively, Gilray said the team always knew they could pull out the ‘big one’ in the final. “We normally pull it together at nationals, and save a little bit. Unlike rowing or kayaking, we can have four or five races in a day. It was part of our team tactics to save the best for the final,” he said.

Once again this week there was an example of a homeowner ending up in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation because they went past the point of a sensible attempt to extinguish a fire. The incident happened last Friday in Woolston and involved a dishwasher. A fire in a dishwasher is hard to reach firstly because of the confined position of the machine. Then even if the source of fire is accessible unless a fire extinguisher is handy how do you put it out? I’ve seen some tragic results of people staying in a burning house in a futile and ultimately

fatal attempt to put a fire out. Unless you are absolutely sure you can succeed please, please, just shut the door and get out. I know we often get called for cats up trees. But how about a dog stuck in a car wheel arch? Also last Friday, this occurred in Phillipstown and was successfully accomplished by the city crew. And the subject of a thousand different comedy sketches in movies over the years was not so funny for the older gentleman who chose the dark of night last Thursday to prune his tree and ended up clasping desperately to a branch when the ladder fell over. Addington’s fire crew responded and assisted him back to ground. Shaken, but not stirred?

Keep calm and find out more with SHELLEY HANNA

YOUR KIWISAVER I have been in KiwiSaver since 2008 putting in 8 per cent and I now have over $61,000 in my account. This is my main asset, apart from my house which is nearly mortgage-free. I have been reading about the crisis in China and falling sharemarkets. Should I be worried? If my KiwiSaver goes down by 10 per cent I will lose $6000. I am now 52 so I have a few years to go before I retire. You are not alone in worrying about share price falls on the global markets. Just remember that media reports are often sensational and designed to stir your emotions. Before you do anything, take a deep breath and review your investment goals and risk profile. Many investors (particularly those new to investing) are happy to put their savings into a high growth fund while markets are going up, but want to switch to a lower risk fund when there is a correction. These investors make the classic mistake of buying high and selling low — instead of the other way round. As you have been in KiwiSaver for nearly eight years you should by now be familiar with your fund manager’s

strategies and know where your money is invested. If you are not, the place to start is the very useful Fund Finder tool on the Sorted website. If you select ‘Check your current fund’ you can find out what returns your fund has achieved since 2008, what fees you are paying, the top 10 investments in the fund and the key personnel. There will also be a link to the fund manager’s website where you can find the quarterly disclosure statements. Back on the Fund finder site you can go to ‘Compare funds’ to see how your fund has

performed relative to other similar funds. It is also a good idea to go to the section ‘Find the right type of fund for you’ and answer the three questions provided. Because your timeframe is longer than 10 years, a balanced or growth fund may be suitable, but you will also need to be able to tolerate some negative returns along the way. There is a silver lining with any sharemarket volatility and that is dollar cost averaging. Because your KiwiSaver contributions continue month in, month out, no matter what the

markets are doing, at times like this your money will be buying more units, particularly if you are in a balanced or growth fund. This will pay off in time. Many investors get cold feet when markets fall, and wait until they recover before investing. With automated contributions this decision is taken away from us. One option for investors like you with a larger balance in KiwiSaver is to split your savings between a lower risk and a higher risk fund. Some fund managers also allow you to specify where your contributions are directed. You may be able to have more of your savings in a lower risk fund while your contributions go into a higher risk fund, making the most of any market ups and downs. Look for a switch form on your fund manager’s website. You can review this annually. It may sound like hard work, but it is worth getting to know your KiwiSaver. You can learn a lot from your fund manager’s website and you can call them on their 0800 number if you need further help. Shelley Hanna is an authorised financial adviser (FSP12241). Forget money, what life do you want to have? By Liz Koh Money is something that enables us to enjoy life, yet it is surprising how many people have difficulty describing their perfect life. For most people, a perfect life will involve a relationship, family, friends, a comfortable place to live, various kinds of meaningful activity (career, community work, hobbies and interests) and perhaps some travel or further education. It probably also involves something that makes life

exciting in some way, as no one wants to lead a boring life. To be a useful guide for decisionmaking purposes, your vision of a perfect life needs to be within reach, but it should involve a bit of a stretch. There is a useful and very simple technique for creating a vision for your perfect life that will help to guide you. Sit down in a comfortable, quiet spot for an hour or so with a pen and paper. Take a moment to clear your mind of things that are happening in the present and in your past life. Imagine there

are few constraints on what you can achieve. See yourself at a time five years from now. Write down on the paper what a typical day in your life would be like, starting from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. Describe where you are living, who is living there with you, how you spend your day in a way that gives you the greatest enjoyment in life, and how you end your day. This is not an exercise about money or possessions, it about how you spend your time, who

you spend it with and the things that give you the most pleasure. It is the starting point for setting yourself some realistic and achievable goals for the year that will take you closer to your perfect life. Liz Koh is an authorised financial adviser. Health through active nutrition How did your book come about?

By Colleen Thorpe

IVE YEARS AGO, sisters Julia and Libby Matthews made a conscious decision to improve their lifestyle. After years of rushing around, not getting enough sleep or eating right, the pair decided it was time to make a change. “Over the last few years I have made some simple changes in my life,” says Libby, who has a diploma of holistic nutrition and a bachelor of naturopathy. “I now have more energy throughout the day; I’m a happier person . . . and much easier to be around.” The right diet for Julia and Libby was one free of processed foods, with an emphasis on wholefoods. As a result of their successful step to a healthier life the sisters have put together a cookbook to help and encourage others. Julia and Libby’s Wholefood Kitchen brings together their best recipes and tips. The book is full of energy-rich, nutritious recipes — most are gluten and dairy-free and all focus on eating for health and nutrition. I asked the girls a few questions.

We were lucky enough to be approached by Penguin Random House around a year ago. This was a dream come true for us!

Can you really eat healthily on a tight budget?

Tell us five easy ways to start on the track to wellbeing. ■ Increase your water intake, it’s free and is so beneficial for our health. ■ Exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym. Walking is a great form of exercise, get out in the fresh air and it helps decrease stress levels. ■ Load up on leafy green vegetables. We should be aiming to have some leafy greens with every meal. They are full of vitamins and minerals. ■ Get enough sleep. We should be getting at least eight hours of sleep a night and we should be aiming to go to bed before 10pm. It’s the

Toothbrush tears? Let children be in charge Child sleep expert Louise Tanguay is owner of The Sleep Store, mum of four boys and here to answer your questions My daughter has finally hit the terrible twos and refuses to brush her teeth. My husband and I have tried everything from helping her brush them, rewarding her for brushing etc — we even invested in a Dora The Explorer toothbrush for her. Even the phrase ‘‘let’s brush our teeth now’’ sends

her into a tantrum. We don’t want to encourage this behaviour and are getting sick of the constant struggle twice a day. It’s horrible knowing that the majority of the time her little teeth aren’t getting the proper clean that they need and I’d hate to see her have dental problems at such a young age. Please help. Thanks, Pip. Two-year-olds can be so strongwilled, with everything from bedtime to carseats to teeth, it can be exhausting. One of the things I find works with toddlers is letting them feel

like they are in charge. You can’t make them clean their teeth without a big battle and a lot of force, so you need to find a way

to let your toddler win and be in charge of the teeth cleaning. Offering options can work well for this age. You could have two brushes and let her choose which colour to use tonight. You can offer to let her clean them herself or you will do it. I often give my little one the toothbrush in the bath and this really increases the chance it will get used. And my best success with toddler teeth cleaning has been a kids’ electric toothbrush. My very-resistant-to-teeth-cleaning 3-year-old loved his so much he would take it to bed and keep brushing after bedtime. And just remember to have no

sugary things in the evening, so if the odd evening goes by when teeth cleaning is missed, it’s not the end of the world. If you have any questions about getting a baby to sleep, safe sleeping, encouraging babies or children to sleep more and on their own, or anything else related to child sleep, Louise is the person to ask. Send your questions to regionalfeatures@apn.co.nz. You can also go to www.thesleepstore.co.nz for free articles on child sleep and products that will help you and your little ones get a good night’s rest.

Facelift keeps Ranger fresh Amidst the raft of new utilities which landed in New Zealand during 2015, Ford weren’t going to let the Ranger go unnoticed. While the Ranger is far from new it did get a fairly hefty upgrade mid-year and it contributed to the series once again taking out top utility sales for last year as well as being New Zealand’s topselling new vehicle. Most of the Ranger’s upgrade incorporated cosmetic enhancements and they contributed to making the ute even more car-like. I say that, taking into consideration it is engineered for load carrying, but it must be said the Ranger is very sophisticated for what could be loosely termed a truck. And it needs to be civilised, most of its competition has leapt ahead in terms of refinement and for this year Ranger is not going to have everything its own way in terms of sale volumes. Inside, the Ranger has had a substantial refresh, new digital features have been incorporated into the instrument cluster, while the complexity within the operating systems is deeper. There’s a lot more kit and that area has been made more occupant-friendly, it is a lot more comfortable and clean in terms of aesthetics. It is also quieter as

a vehicle with greater emphasis on eliminating noise, vibration and harshness. That comfort is one reason why I say the Ranger at this point is still the most car-like of all the utes to drive, it has a fabulous ride and the control networks can lure you into believing there’s nothing behind the rear seats. But, of course, there’s the rear deck area which makes the model sought after for both commercial and recreational use. At the other end sits a fivecylinder engine which first found its way into the light commercial Transit. I’m a bit of a fan of five-pot engines, and the 3.2-litre Ranger unit is a beauty in terms of power delivery, economy and quiet operating manner. According to Ford, it is rated at 147kW and 470Nm which are healthy outputs, and a combined cycle 9.6-litre per 100km (29mpg) fuel usage rating. During my four-day evaluation the trip computer readout

Price: Ford Ranger XLT, $63,040. Dimensions: Length, 5351mm; width, 1860mm; height, 1821mm. Configuration: Five-cylinder longitudinal, four-wheel-drive, 3198cc, 147kW, 470Nm, sixspeed automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.1sec.

FORD RANGER: Hefty upgrade for 2016.

listed reasonably close to that (11l/100km – 26mpg). The evaluation car was my first drive in a Ranger with automatic transmission, I have driven the manual on a couple of occasions and it would be my first choice, but the automatic has fluid shifts and interacts well with the solid low down power from the engine. There are 14 variants in the Ranger line-up, of those, eight are four-wheel-drive, the test car was in XLT specification and lists at $63,040, the range starts at $36,040 and ends at $69,640 for the Wildtrak double cab

wellside. Ford claim 237mm of ground clearance for the Ranger. During my evaluation I took it on a short uphill burst on a clay surface. The track was heavily rutted but the Ranger just eased up through the rough bits with barely any throttle pressure. The suspension soaks up the bumps and arrests the jolts, the ride is almost plush, yet underneath lies the engineering to accept a heavy load and offer a smooth in-cabin ride. The Ranger is just as much at home on the highway as it is off-road. The steering has

definite feel, and body balance in a corner is remarkable given its ladder chassis and design parameters. Mostly, though, it feels constantly controllable, and that promotes confidence from behind the steering wheel. Given its double cab layout, the Ranger is more than a utility, it is a genuine five-seater that all the family can travel distances in, it also has the kit to cover all bases, including satellite navigation. More importantly, though, it has a wealth of safety gear, so much so that column space doesn’t allow comprehensive detailing, but to say Ford hasn’t skimped anywhere in terms of what they have built into the vehicle. I can’t wait to see the monthly sales figures throughout 2016, the battle for supremacy in the light commercial market is raging.

‘Life changing’

teachers nurture jazz talent

anny Addis got hooked on music when he was 13 years old. After years of playing in high school bands he decided to pursue his dream: being a jazz musician. He studied CPIT’s Bachelor of Music Arts in Jazz and loved it. “CPIT immediately felt like home. I’ve always had a passion for music, but I never took it seriously. I was a bit nervous on my first day, but meeting like-minded people was awesome. We were like a big family.” He studied two years of Jazz and then ‘arranging’ in his third year, to learn to compose music. The teachers really made a difference, he says; “The teachers were absolutely life changing. They go the extra mile for you, it goes way beyond just teaching in class. You can form a band with them and they give advice. I would always take music to one of the tutors during lunch time and he was really supportive.” The energy and inspiration Manny got from his teachers he now passes on to his own students, by teaching at the School of Rock. “The teachers used a very personal way of teaching. They try to make you play like yourself, developing your own style. I am trying to do this with my students as well and of course I try to make it fun too.” Manny loves teaching, but standing on a stage and performing for a big crowd is what makes his heart beat faster.

“At least once a week I’m on stage, playing guitar in my band or DJ’ing. Once I opened before the Gorillaz, which was awesome. When the show is going well, it instantly makes you feel amazing. You feel the energy.” Manny is grateful with where he is in his life at the moment. CPIT played a big role in that, he says; “I don’t feel like any of the musical stuff I’m doing now, I could have done without the Bachelor of Music Arts. The course developed my skills, made me meet the right people in the industry and helped me get close relationships with other musicians in Christchurch.” To learn more about CPIT Aoraki’s Bachelor of Music Arts, visit www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 24 24 76 for more information.

Creative students take part as technology dissolves boundaries

C

PIT Aoraki’s new Motion Design qualification reflects huge technological shifts that are blurring lines between film, gaming, online multimedia and art, says a key contributor to the innovative new programme. CPIT Aoraki tutor Tim Budgen has seen multimedia evolve during the last 15 years of teaching in Art & Design at CPIT. “I am definitely interested in the convergence of art and technology and in non-traditional outcomes for multimedia work. There is a good representation of this in Christchurch where you have, for example, projections onto graffiti in the Spectrum festival, Gapfiller projects challenging norms and bringing people into creative spaces in the city, lots of street art and the Giraffes project where painted giraffes started appearing around the city. “There was an underground of nontraditional art here before, but it has really expanded since the earthquakes and gained huge awareness and acceptance.” This expansion of art, combined with Tim’s connections, opens opportunities for students. In winter, for example, Motion Design students will help to create a light installation and animation event in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Tim’s industry experience, specialising in interactive video installations for live music events has further convinced him that CPIT Aoraki is on the right track - preparing graduates with the tools and the creative critical thinking skills that this fast moving industry needs. Graduates of the multimedia specialisation

3D, animation, gaming - Art & Design is evolving fast. CPIT Aoraki’s new Motion Design programme reflects the crossovers and changes in this exciting industry.

are working in a variety of companies. “A lot of our students are interested in film and gaming, but some specialise in drawing and concept art. We have graduates at Christchurch game design companies Stickman and Cerebral Fix, quite a few at WETA in different roles, some doing digital design for web, one is working as an artist and another developed an app for his final year project which is available on the app store.” The Bachelor of Design (Motion Design) uses the latest industry equipment including Cinema 4D for modelling, animating, lighting, texturing and rendering. CPIT Aoraki enjoys a close relationship with Cinema 4D creators Maxon and distributors Megabits who support the programme with software and a major prize for the best 3D work. There’s still time to enrol for 2016. For more information see www.cpit.ac.nz

Learning stems from home

return home to Christchurch for one young local family has seen boutique Home Based Childcare service “Stems FROM HOME” begin to sow learning seeds in the mainland. After 5 very successful years of

‘growing young minds’ in east Auckland, Emma McAlister is very excited to be able to share the infectious Stems passion for babies, toddlers and young children with her fellow Cantabrians. Following the latest in early brain development research Stems fosters

the belief that our little ones learn best when able to form an attachment to one other significant care-giver when family cannot be there to nurture them. The ability for each child’s learning journey to grow individually from their own interests and at their own pace,

25

using natural and authentic learning environments is key to Stems excellent reputation. These key guidelines, coupled with the practical aspects of small ‘family’ groups, affordability, proximity to home, reduced child illness and stress for the children with all learning underpinned by the NZ ECE curriculum ensures that Stems stands out as an excellent option for many young families locally. Due to growth, Stems are looking to recruit more special Home Based Educators now! If young children naturally warm to you and you are wanting a career with family friendly hours please contact Emma directly to discuss today on 0800 78 33 78 emma@stemsfromhome.co.nz

HYDRATE TO ELEVATE We all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable.

W

ith over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body. A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake. With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it. This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is this their

number one drink of choice. Some people even believe that the water consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate. Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses. Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water. In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water. For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.

MUMS & DADS

After Before

By simply turning tap water into sparkling water with a SodaStream machine and adding a splash of fresh lemon juice or naturally squeezed fruit juice, is bound to have a positive impact on our health and wellbeing.

Country music legend Brendan Dugan and his dad Pat will be appearing along side little sister Annette at the Hornby Workingmen's Club at 2pm on Sunday 14th February. With a career spanning over 4 decades, Brendan Dugan is something of a household name. Well known for his live performances, TV appearances, and 15 albums to his credit, Brendan has claimed many awards during his career including NZ Entertainer of the Year. Brendan & Pat years ago the Country Music Association of NZ recognised his efforts by presenting him with an award. This was a very proud moment for the family. Soon to turn 90, he is still in great voice and 'sings like a bird'. Completing the lineup, direct from USA, is 'little sis' Annette. Sunday will be a great chance to see this renowned country music family all together in one show. Tickets are $15 on sale now at the Hornby WMC office, Carmen Rd, phone 349 9026. The Dugan's will also perform at the Ashburton MSA Club on Friday 12th February.
